Travel Beauty Light!

Don’t you hate having to check-in bags because of your toiletries- And with all the traveling I do back and forth between LA and NYC, I’m always looking for beauty essentials that are cool to use and light to pack.

Case in point:

Forget the little refillable bottles from the hotel bathroom that ooze shampoo all over luggage.? Instead, try these cool finds from LUSH Cosmetics. The below items can be packed in your carry-on and take up very little space. I swear.

FOR YOUR HAIR…

< alt='Shampoo Bar Tin' width='72' height='72' border='0' />< alt='Godiva' width='61' height='61' border='0' />

Godiva Shampoo and Conditioning Bar: $10.95

This solid shampoo and conditioner in one is perfect for packing. Store it in a shampoo bar tin, use it to wash your hair, clothes and body while on the road. For those extra-long trips, one shampoo bar lasts just as long as three 250ml shampoo bottles. Genius!

FOR YOUR BODY…

< alt='Body Butter Tin' width='67' height='67' border='0' />< alt='Buffy' width='64' height='64' border='0' />

Buffy Body Butter: $11.95 / 3.3 oz

No need to pack a moisturizer. Buffy, (yes, that’s its name…) is a solid moisturizing bar formula containing cocoa and shea butter with ground rice, almonds and aduki beans to exfoliate and moisturize the skin while in the shower. Stash in your carry-on luggage for those quick trips.

Enjoy that next trip!

Kittenesque Review: A Crowd Pleasing Fruity Vanilla Fragrance

I think that this fragrance got lost on the way to the store. Kittenesque is a new addition to the Flirt!, a brand created by Estee Lauder for Kohl’s. I like the scent, but if you sprayed it on 10 women and asked them where to buy it, I bet 9 out of the 10 would say Victoria’s Secret. I feel like VS has the market cornered on crowd pleasing fruity-vanilla blends that are just a bit on the smexy side, and Kittenesque would fit right in with those scents.

Notes:
Top Notes: Mandarin, Raspberry, Blackberry, Peach Nectar
Middle Notes: Orange Blossom, Jasmine, Honeysuckle
Base Notes: Hazelnut, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Vanilla

This fragrance opens with the Mandarin and a touch of Raspberry and grounded by the Jasmine. It is floral and a bit fruity and kind of…. sparkly- Effervescent- It makes me think a little bit of a bubbling champagne drink for some reason. As the first half hour passes the Mandarin and Raspberry calm down a little bit, and I can smell a bit more of the peach. It becomes a bit warmer, and the Sandalwood and Vanilla come out to ground the scent.

I did like this scent, and I’d wear it pretty much anywhere. It lasted about 8 hours on me.

Flirt! is available exclusively at Kohls

SHADOW FOCUS: EYE COLOR

photos by getty, gorunway + imaxtree, post by amy nadine, graphic design by eunice chun

Yes most neutral shades (taupe, grey, nude, bronze, copper, white, etc) look just as gorgeous with green eyes as with any other eye colors. But if you really want to make your green eyes pop, frame them with a shade from the purple family and you will become obsessed! Of course you shouldn’t wear purple every day because it’s such a statement color, but bring it out whenever you really want to turn heads.

AUBERGINE + MAROON: Because these shades have the most red + pink undertones (the shades across from green on the color wheel), they are the most powerful in contrasting with green, therefore making them pop. We love Joeur Powder Eyeshadow in Bordeaux.

ROYAL PURPLE: You know we live for this paired with a red lip! Try Stila Eyeshadow in Cassis.

LAVENDER + VIOLET: These shades are gorgeous with a peachy cheek and nude lip. Our favorite is Too Faced Exotic Color Intense Shadow in Violet Femme.

PERIWINKLE: This blue-based purple is perfect when you want a softer look. We love Stila Eyeshadow in Mambo.

Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara Makes Sad Lashes Happy About Blue

Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara Makes Sad Lashes Happy About Blue

Some things are just made to be together, ya know, like chubby cats and costume jewelry, pink feather boas and plastic tiaras, stretchy pants and pints of ice cream (again, the whole no-dairy thing = not happening), blue mascara and naked butt cheeks…

Wait — what was that last one again-

Oh, yeah. Blue mascara and bare bottoms. Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara Makes Sad Lashes Happy About Blue So about that, I wore the new Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effect Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara in Majorelle Blue ($30) to the Bay to Breakers yesterday, and over every inch of the 7.25-mile course and after many, many bare booty sightings, Majorelle Blue held the curl from my lash curler and refused to flake or smudge.

More importantly, the color, a bright electric blue, and the formula’s fringe-fattening powers, fit right in with all of the funny faces I made during the race. Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara Makes Sad Lashes Happy About Blue

It began at the starting line…

My friend Marisol’s workout buddies asked me to take a picture of them. “Sure!” I yelled over the crowd, which was steadily growing around us.

Time was of the essence once the tortillas started flying through the air! (It’s a tradition; folks throw them like Frisbees.) One second, I’m composing the camera and telling the girls to “Say ‘cheese’ in 3-2-1…” The next, a guy wearing nothing but body glitter (and running shoes) is brushing past me down the street, whoosh!

The camera shutter clicked.

I’m thinking, Uh oh… Did I get the right shot- And the girls started cracking up. “Your eyes got SO BIG!”

This happened several times during the race. One or more naked butt cheeks would cross my path, I’d make a funny face, and my eyes would double in size! One might conclude that this wide-eyed effect was due to good old fashioned shock, but I say it was Majorelle Blue.

Yeah, it was mostly shock. But I do think Majorelle’s intense bright blue contrasts with my brown eyes in a way that makes my peepers look just plain HUGE!

I see a similar effect on the YSL model’s eyes (I’m diggin’ her ’80s look)…

Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara Makes Sad Lashes Happy About Blue

This is kinda like how it was at the Bay to Breakers, except that instead of peering up at a presumably handsome Don Draper type, an assumption I’m basing on the shoes at the bottom of the shot, I was staring at a skinny naked dude with the word “slut” tattooed across his left butt cheek. IN ALL CAPS!

For what it’s worth…at least he had the good sense not to use Comic Sans. Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara Makes Sad Lashes Happy About Blue

Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara, $30

  • One of four waterproof mascaras released for YSL Summer 2012 (there’s also a Charcoal Black, Burnt Brown and a Signature Violet)
  • Great for overall lengthening and thickening, but since the formula’s a little thick, you might want to keep a lash comb around during application to separate lashes
  • The mascara feels light, not heavy, but it does leave my lashes a little stiff
  • It’s extremely waterproof (just don’t rub at your eyes)
  • Two coats deliver a dramatic electric blue lash look

PRICE: $30
AVAILABILITY: Available now at YSL counters and nordstrom.com
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A- (pricey, but I love the color and performance)

B2B 2012

Just a few pics from the race yesterday. I’m pretty sure I vetted out the NSFW ones… NOTE: I said, “pretty sure.” Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Blue Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara Makes Sad Lashes Happy About Blue

I Think the MAC Hey, Sailor! Eyeshadows Are Anything But Boring

I Think the MAC Hey, Sailor! Eyeshadows Are Anything But Boring

I can see why some makeup mavens, especially die-hard MAC fans, might find the five powder Eye Shadows ($16 each) in the Hey, Sailor! collection a bit on the boring side. After all, only two of the shades are brights (Feeling Fresh and Nautical Navy). The other three are neutrals (Barefoot, Jaunty and Crystal Avalanche).

Many MAC addicts crave the brand’s bold, crazy colors, but Hey, Sailor! targets a different type of fan, guys and gals who love their MAC neutrals served with a sprinkling of brights on the side.

When I see all five of these colors together — the gold, tan and white with the brighter green and blue — I don’t see a batch of boring eyeshadows at all.

Mind you, I wouldn’t call them flashy, but I think they do look beautiful together, and I like how they aren’t just the same teals and corals we usually see on cats and counters each summer…

I Think the MAC Hey, Sailor! Eyeshadows Are Anything But Boring

Is Jaunty special at all- It looks pretty standard issue in the pan…

ZOMG! If you freak for neutrals (like I am wont to do), get ready to fly your freak flag because you will love, LOVE this color.

Picture a sandy golden version of MAC Ricepaper — like sunlight reflected off of white sand. Lately, it’s all I’ve been wanting to wear.

For a fresh, super easy summer eye, I’ll pat it all over my lids, blend out the edges, and apply Feeling Fresh or Nautical Navy on my upper lash lines.

I think of Jaunty as a nice departure (or jaunt, as it were) from the existing neutrals in MAC’s permanent line.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+

Do I need Feeling Fresh if I already have MAC Pro Longwear Eyeshadow in Fresh Flare-

Good question. Well…I’d say they’re more like kissing cousins than dead on dupes.

Fresh Flare has pearly golden undertones that Feeling Fresh lacks, but Feeling Fresh isn’t feeling sorry for itself. No way. It’s ready to par-tay! — complete with sparkly flecks of tiny glitter.

Now, if Fresh Flare is already in your makeup bag, you’re already feeling pretty fresh, so good job. I Think the MAC Hey, Sailor! Eyeshadows Are Anything But Boring You could probably skip Feeling Fresh without skipping a beat, but if you’ve got a thing for greens (I can’t resist ‘em!), you might appreciate the subtle differences between these two shades, not to mention their differences in intensity and texture.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A-

Crystal Avalanche scares the [BLEEP] outta me! How can I wear a white frost without it looking harsh on my skin-

I was actually really surprised to like this shade as much as I do. High contrast- Absolutely, but I don’t think it looks as stark as I expected it to on my NC42 skin.

I like the way it brightens my lids…kinda like the effect I get from Vex.

I’ve been buffing it on top of primed lids with a fluffy MAC 217 (the domed shape helps to sheer it out) or using a pencil brush like the 219 to apply it in the inner corners around my tear ducts.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+

Barefoot versus Gorgeous Gold: what’s the difference-

I think they do look a lot alike in their pans, but Barefoot applies sheerer on me with a little less green and more yellow.

Barefoot borrows a page from Crystal Avalanche, though, by also brightening up my eyes, and for that I like to apply it on the inner half of my lids.

Oh, I also think Barefoot looks fab with Feeling Fresh. The two of them make a great couple.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+

I Think the MAC Hey, Sailor! Eyeshadows Are Anything But Boring
Clockwise from the white pan on the lower left: Crystal Avalanche, Nautical Navy, Barefoot, Jaunty and Feeling Fresh

I Think the MAC Hey, Sailor! Eyeshadows Are Anything But Boring
Swatches from left to right: Jaunty, Barefoot, Crystal Avalanche, Nautical Navy and Feeling Fresh

I Think the MAC Hey, Sailor! Eyeshadows Are Anything But Boring
Wearing Jaunty all over my lids, Crystal Avalanche in the inner corners, Barefoot on my inner lash lines (sides closer to my nose), Feeling Fresh in the center and Nautical Navy on the outer sides of both my upper and lower lash lines

Nautical Navy: just how navy is it-

It’s pretty darn navy! And pigmented, too. But I don’t know if I’d go so far as to call it a true navy. On my skin, when I buff it out, I see a blackened base.

I think it’s pretty, but I’ve seen this color before in other MAC collections. That said, it might be a good addition to your collection if you don’t already have many blues or another like it. To its credit, I think it’s very soft and easy to blend.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B

Outfit of the Day: Relaxing At My Moms House in ClevelandIt’s rare that I post an Outfit of the Day post on The Beauty of Life, but today is an exception. I’m not going to say this is the most fashionable thing I’ve ever worn, but it is an outfit I wear pretty frequently — especially when I’m traveling, which was the case today. I took a moment to sit under the tree at my mom’s house in Cleveland and enjoy the sunshine in what is probably the most comfortable outfit I own, jazzed up with my favorite pair of bold gold chain earrings. Here’s the final look for you!

Hue black cotton leggings
TOMS red canvas Classics
Bing Bang oversized gold chain earrings

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 221

Mon, 05/21/2012 by Karen | Posted in: Just For Fun

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 221
At the Bay to Breakers with two Beastie Boys fans paying tribute to MCA. Notice the people in the background looking up- They’re staring at a wave of tortillas being tossed into the air, a Bay to Breakers tradition.

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway-”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving-), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
    Mood:
Surprisingly alert! — because I went to bed early last night and slept well, but I’m also very achoo!. Sneezy. My allergies have been extra awful lately.

I’ve actually been up since 5:30 this morning, which is pretty darn early for me. And yes, it was on purpose. Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 221 In a weird way, having to get up at 4 yesterday morning for Bay to Breakers inspired me to get an earlier start today. I forget sometimes that the earlier you get up, the more stuff you can get done in the day…until you utterly pass out from exhaustion after the 6 o’clock news, LOL!

  1. If you could telepathically make your pet understand one thing, what would it be-
I’d want Tabs to know how much he’s changed my life for the better. Things were good before, but when he came along, everything got better. He’s always good for a laugh and a smile.
  2. Do you do anything in particular to celebrate the start of summer-
Not really. No big parties or BBQs. Mostly, I just like to get the deck ready, putting up the umbrella, refreshing the planters and putting out the comfy cushions for the chairs. I like to turn our little deck into an extended living/dining room for summer.
  3. Hey, Sailor! before dawn this morning.

I’m wearing Barefoot Eyeshadow and Blue Stripe Eye Pencil on my Eyes, Launch Away! Blush on my cheeks, and Blessedly Lipglass on my lips.

  4. Do you have a special spot where you like to read-
I do. When it’s not too hot or cold outside, I like to read in the papasan chair on the deck; otherwise, I just park my bottom on the left side of the living room couch (always the left side, but for no reason in particular; just feels right).
  5. Is there a song that always puts you in a good/better mood-
Is there ever! Soooo many songs, but Jessie J’s Domino has been my favorite feel good jam for a few weeks.
  6. Do you keep a pair of casual shoes by the front door-
My pink and black Reef flip-flops are never far from the door…unless I’m wearing them, or unless Tabs has hidden them somewhere.
